BRONZE MEDALLION COURSE DETAILS
The Royal Life Saving Society Bronze Medallion is recognized as the minimum standard for a qualified lifesaver. The Bronze Medallion training program, conducted by an R.L.S.S.A accredited training member who will provide you with the skills and knowledge to react appropriately in a number of different aquatic emergency situations. The aim is to develop the level of knowledge, judgment, technique and physical ability required to carry out safe water rescues. Holders of this award are recognized as having gained a minimum standard as a qualified lifesaver.
Course Duration: 14 hours
Pre-requisites: Students need to be able to swim a minimum of 400m continuously and must be 14 years of age or in the year in which the candidate turns 14.
Theory: Safe water practices; survival in the water; self-preservation; recognizing an emergency; assessment before and during a rescue; priorities for rescue; CPR theory; acceptance of responsibility; use of bystanders; emergency care and contacting emergency services.
Resuscitation: Demonstrate effective CPR
Swim: Swim 400 meters continuously within 13 minutes. 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 100m survival backstroke, 100m sidestroke.
Timed Tow: Swim 50 meters, then tow a patient 50m within 3 min 15 sec.
Survival and Rescue Skills: Demonstrate a range of survival techniques and appropriate rescues for a range of different aquatic environments and scenarios.
Spinal Injuries: Basic management of a suspected spinal injury in shallow water.
Rescue Initiative: Demonstrate initiative in effecting a rescue of two people who are in difficulty up to 15 meters from safety.
2 days – Saturday and Sunday, 9.00am – 5.00pm Saturday and 9.00am – 3.00pm Sunday.
REQUALIFICATION BRONZE MEDALLION COURSE DETAILS
The Royal Life Saving Society Bronze Medallion is recognized as the minimum standard for a qualified lifesaver. The Bronze Medallion Award is only valid for one year from the date the certificate was obtained. Studies of skill and knowledge retention of trained people have shown that performance declines significantly if regular practice is not undertaken. Royal Life Saving recommends that all professional lifesaving qualifications are updated on an annual basis. This training course will update your RLSSWA Bronze Medallion award.
Course Duration: 5 hours
Pre-requisite: Current Bronze Medallion award or an equivalent award approved by Royal Life Saving.
1 Day – Sunday, 10.00am – 3.00pm.
What to bring each day for all courses:
Bathers, 2 towels, long pants and long sleeve shirt (for wearing in the water), warm clothing for afterwards – Bronze Medallion courses only.
Any stationary you would like – Notebook, pens, pencils and highlighters.
Water, snacks, lunch (centre cafe is available).
Photo identification must be presented the day you commence the course
